THE EXPERIENCE

FIND STRUCTURE IN THE CITY

Tokyo is full of photographs hiding in plain sight — repeating shapes, hard light, long shadows, reflections and people moving through carefully defined spaces.

Spend the morning exploring Ebisu, Roppongi and Yurakucho with Tokyo-based fine-art street photographer Laurence Bouchard, learning how to recognise those elements and turn ordinary urban scenes into photographs with structure, tension and visual impact.

Over four hours, Laurence will guide you through his approach to architecture, geometry, light and shadow, showing you how to simplify a busy scene, use people within architectural spaces and make more deliberate decisions about position, timing and framing.

While Laurence is known for striking minimalist black-and-white work, this isn’t a black-and-white-only workshop.

Colour, reflections, rain, silhouettes and changing light can all become part of the frame. The emphasis is on learning how to build photographs that feel intentional and visually strong, regardless of how you choose to process them afterwards.

Laurence’s approach sits within a long tradition of street photography built around observation, geometry and decisive timing — but the goal isn’t to imitate someone else’s style. It’s to understand why certain photographs work, recognise those possibilities more quickly and begin developing a stronger visual language of your own.

The workshop is suitable for photographers of all levels, with practical shooting throughout and direct feedback from Laurence as you work.

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO EXPERIENCE TOKYO

Come for the photography, the city, or a bit of both.

Whether you want focused street photography coaching, help developing your eye, or simply a more thoughtful way to explore Tokyo with someone who knows where to look, the experience can be shaped around you.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN TO LOOK FOR

A person in a blue uniform and helmet, possibly a security guard or police officer, walking on a large tiled floor with shadows of a barred structure casting patterns across the surface.

FIGURE + SPACE

Placing people deliberately within the frame.

Silhouette of a person walking behind a metal gate with shadows cast on the ground, reflecting on a wet surface.

REFLECTION + LAYER

Working with glass, rain, surfaces and overlapping elements.

A young woman with long hair is running and holding a phone to her ear, smiling. She is dressed in a school uniform with a plaid skirt, white knee-high socks, and black shoes, and carries a backpack. She is running against a textured wall with a curved brick pattern, and the photo is in black and white.

TIMING + MOMENT

Waiting for the person, gesture or movement that completes the frame.

Silhouette of a person holding an umbrella on a rainy day, standing on wet tiled pavement in an urban setting.

GEOMETRY + STRUCTURE

Finding order, repetition and balance in the city.

A woman walking on a tiled street holding an umbrella, with her shadow cast on a textured wall, framed by a dark doorway.

LIGHT + SHADOW

Recognising hard light, silhouettes and contrast.

A woman holding an umbrella and a shopping bag with the word 'CELINE' on it, walking past a modern building with horizontal lines on its exterior in black and white.

SIMPLIFY + BALANCE

Removing distractions and making deliberate compositional choices.

The Flow

01

SHOOT. REVIEW. ADJUST.

Move through Ebisu, Roppongi and Yurakucho with Laurence, working with changing light, architecture, reflections and passing figures.

At each location, you’ll shoot first, then review selected images together before moving on. Laurence will help you spot what’s working, catch any technical issues and suggest adjustments to composition, timing or camera settings while the scene is still fresh.

02

MOVE ON. APPLY IT.

Take what you’ve just discussed into the next location — refining your approach as the light, architecture and opportunities change throughout the morning.
