THE EXPERIENCE

BEYOND THE TOKYO YOU ALREADY KNOW.

Ueno has always existed a little differently from the Tokyo around it.

Behind the station and familiar landmarks is a dense network of alleyways, markets, small bars and late-night businesses shaped by decades of change. The neighborhood became one of Tokyo’s major post-war black-market districts, and traces of that history still remain — layered together with the people, businesses and communities that occupy its streets today.

For a street photographer, that makes Ueno an endlessly unpredictable place to explore.

Join Tokyo documentary photographer Yusuke Nagata for an evening photographing the neighborhood as it unfolds. Rather than moving between predetermined photo spots or chasing familiar images of Tokyo, you’ll learn to slow down, observe what’s happening around you and respond to real moments as they appear.

Yusuke will work alongside you, sharing how he reads a street, approaches unfamiliar situations and decides when something is worth photographing. Together, you’ll explore how light, distance, timing and context can turn an ordinary encounter into an image that says something about the place where it was made.

The emphasis isn’t on collecting as many photographs as possible. It’s about becoming more attentive to the relationships between people, place and moment — and developing the instincts to recognize them.

After the walk, you’ll sit down together to review your photographs and explore how selection and editing can shape the story they tell.

No staged scenes. No predetermined shots. Just Ueno as you find it.
