THE EXPERIENCE

Welcome to Shinjuku and Kabukicho, one of the largest entertainment districts in Asia and one of the most visually intense parts of Tokyo.

By night, the area becomes a dense mix of bars, restaurants, host and hostess clubs, love hotels, cinemas, late-night businesses and seemingly endless advertising. Giant faces look down from illuminated billboards, signs compete for attention above the streets and crowds move between the main avenues and much smaller backstreets hidden behind them.

It's chaotic, sometimes strange, occasionally seedy and always changing — which is exactly why we keep coming back with our cameras.

We've photographed this part of Tokyo extensively, but the appeal isn't simply the neon or the stereotypical "cyberpunk Tokyo" imagery Kabukicho is known for. Look beyond that and there's a much more interesting place to photograph: people disappearing into tiny bars, workers standing beneath enormous advertisements, quiet moments happening in the middle of crowded streets, reflections that completely transform a scene, and glimpses into a side of Tokyo that can be difficult to read from the outside.

During the workshop we'll move between the brighter streets and some of the smaller alleys and corners we've discovered over years of photographing the area. Rather than following a fixed photo-tour route, we'll respond to what's happening around us and spend more time wherever the photographs are.

Kabukicho can be challenging to photograph well. There's a lot happening at once, and part of the experience is learning how to make sense of that — when to get closer, when to wait, what to leave out of the frame and how to find a photograph within all the visual noise.

Tokyo Redlight is our introduction to Shinjuku after dark — not just the neon version you've already seen, but the people, contradictions and unexpected moments happening underneath it.
