Tokyo Lucky Streets is for photographers who want to get away from the city's busiest districts and spend a few hours exploring a quieter, more everyday side of Tokyo.

We begin at Gotokuji, a temple closely associated with the maneki-neko, or beckoning cat. Thousands of the small white figures fill sections of the temple grounds, but there's much more to photograph here than the cats themselves. The surrounding area gives us temples, residential streets, local shops, older houses and the small details of daily life that are easy to miss when you're moving quickly through the city.

From there we'll make our way through the neighbourhood on foot, following backstreets and smaller roads rather than sticking to a rigid route. This is a workshop where we have the freedom to wander a little. A person passing on a bicycle, an old storefront, a neighbourhood cat, interesting light falling across a house or something completely unexpected can change where we go next.

We'll eventually make our way towards Sangenjaya — or Sancha, as it's usually known locally. Just a couple of stops from Shibuya, it has a completely different character. Older shops and narrow streets sit alongside cafés, bars and newer businesses, while Sankaku Chitai is a dense pocket of tiny alleys that feels far removed from the larger roads surrounding it.

Photographically, the route gives us a lot to work with. We'll look at how to find photographs in quieter environments where the subject isn't always obvious, how to notice details and relationships between things, and how light, timing and composition can turn an ordinary piece of everyday Tokyo into a strong photograph.

It's also one of our more relaxed workshops. There isn't a particular type of photograph we're chasing and you don't need to be interested in any one style of street photography. We'll adapt the workshop to what catches your eye and help you develop that throughout the afternoon.

From lucky cats and local temples to residential backstreets and the streets of Sancha, this is Tokyo at a slower pace — with plenty to discover along the way.
