THE EXPERIENCE
CAPTURE THE FEELING, NOT THE DETAIL.
Some photographs describe a moment in detail. Others capture how it felt.
Movement can tell its own story — the blur of someone passing, the rhythm of a crowd, a figure standing still as the city moves around them, or fleeting shapes that exist for only a fraction of a second.
In this three-hour workshop, Tokyo street photographer Preston takes you through the streets of Gotanda and Meguro to explore a more expressive way of photographing everyday life. His work uses movement, timing, layers and abstraction to transform ordinary moments into photographs shaped by atmosphere and emotion.
Rather than simply learning a set of camera settings, you'll explore how Preston sees a scene — what catches his eye, how he anticipates movement, when he waits and when he reacts, and how he finds structure within the constant flow of the city.
You'll experiment with slower shutter speeds, Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) and other ways of working with motion while photographing real situations as they unfold around you. You'll see how different shutter speeds, camera movements and subjects can completely change the feeling of an image.
The aim isn't to reproduce Preston's style. It's to understand the techniques and creative thinking behind it, experiment with them on the streets of Tokyo, and begin developing a visual language of your own.
