THE EXPERIENCE

THIS IS SHIBUYA THROUGH A CYBERPUNK LENS

Shibuya is one of the most photographed parts of Tokyo, but there is much more to it than the famous crossing.

At night, the scale of the neighbourhood, its architecture, elevated walkways, huge advertising screens, reflective surfaces and constantly changing light make it an incredible place to experiment with a more futuristic style of street and urban photography.

This workshop is about using those elements to create our own interpretation of cyberpunk Tokyo.

We'll move away from the most obvious viewpoints and explore different levels and perspectives around Shibuya, looking for strong architecture, reflections, symmetry, leading lines and pockets of artificial light. The area is constantly being rebuilt and reshaped, so we're always scouting and adapting the route as new buildings, viewpoints and photographic opportunities appear.

We'll also look at how much perspective can change the feeling of an image. Shooting low and wide can exaggerate the scale of the city, while elevated positions can turn busy streets into layers of people, signs, traffic and architecture. Reflections and glass can distort familiar scenes into something much less literal.

The workshop is suitable for beginners through to experienced photographers, and we'll adapt what we work on depending on your level and what you want to get from the session. That might mean getting more comfortable shooting at night, improving composition, experimenting with new techniques, or developing a more deliberate visual style.

And because the cyberpunk look doesn't end when you press the shutter, we'll also introduce the role that color grading plays in creating the final image. You'll receive our Lightroom preset as a starting point and learn how to adjust it to your own photographs rather than simply applying the same look to everything.

The goal isn't to make Shibuya look like a science-fiction movie. It's to learn how to use what's already there to create your own version of it.
