THE EXPERIENCE

AFTER WORK THE CITY SHIFTS TO NIGHT MODE

There is a particular moment in Tokyo when the working day ends and the character of the city begins to change.

Nowhere is that transition more visible than around Shimbashi and Yurakucho. One of Tokyo's major business districts by day, in the evening its narrow streets, restaurants and drinking alleys fill with office workers meeting colleagues, grabbing dinner, having a drink before heading home — or settling in for a much longer night.

For us, this is one of the most interesting parts of Tokyo to photograph. We've spent years walking these streets and keep returning because they're unpredictable. You might find a quiet moment through the window of a tiny restaurant, a group spilling out of an izakaya, someone sitting alone at a counter, or a scene that comes together for only a second before disappearing again.

The salaryman has become one of the visual symbols of modern Tokyo, but this workshop is less about chasing that stereotype and more about photographing the culture and everyday life around it. The contrast between formal business attire and these intimate, sometimes chaotic after-work spaces creates moments that feel distinctly Tokyo.

We'll explore the area between Shimbashi and Yurakucho together, moving through places we know well while leaving enough room for the unexpected. Depending on your experience and what interests you, we can work on reading scenes, getting closer, anticipating moments, using reflections and layers, shooting in difficult light, or simply slowing down and becoming more deliberate about what you photograph.

Tokyo Afterhours is about experiencing this part of the city as much as photographing it — spending a few hours inside a side of Tokyo that many visitors don’t see.
